— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Bossière, a village in the municipality of Mettet in Namur province, Wallonia, STARC designed a detached four-facade single-family house with a double carport, carefully positioned within a quiet, landscaped setting.
The corner plot between two roads was used to full advantage: the main facade faces the principal street, while vehicle access is routed from the secondary road directly to the carport, keeping the garden entirely free of traffic. The level difference between the plot and the street is resolved by an existing retaining wall into which a staircase with flower beds has been integrated, creating a welcoming and well-considered entrance sequence.
The south-facing garden maximises solar gain throughout the day. The open-plan living and kitchen area benefits from wide glazed openings onto this sunny exposure, while the double-height entrance hall brings light and spatial generosity to the heart of the home. The massing of the house is deliberately simple and traditional, with a pitched roof clad in dark grey flat interlocking tiles, while the flat-roofed carport, finished in composite panels matching the window frames, introduces a contemporary counterpoint. A rectangular terrace at the rear, aligned with the carport, extends the living spaces seamlessly towards the garden.
The facade materiality plays on two complementary brick tones, red-brown and brown-grey, lending the building character and a sense of local rootedness. Block paving unifies the terrace and entrance staircase in a consistent mineral palette.
