— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

This renovation of a single-family house in Waterloo, in the Walloon Brabant province, is built around a clear volumetric recomposition, articulating a two-storey flat-roofed main body with a lower ancillary volume set back behind it, encompassing the reconstruction of a garage and the addition of dormer windows. This hierarchy of scales organises the reading of the building from the garden while structuring the relationship between the living spaces and the secondary functions.

The choice of materials reflects a deliberate restraint: a uniform white render unifies all facades and erases the traces of previous alterations, while anthracite joinery gives the volume its rhythm and legibility. Fenestration is handled differently according to orientation: wide sliding bays on the ground floor establish a frank continuity between the living area and the paved terrace, opening generously onto the garden, while the upper floor combines more measured openings with a full-width balcony whose glass balustrade preserves the transparency and lightness of the composition.

The interior transformations support this overall coherence by redistributing spaces in favour of the new openings and the natural light they bring in. Designed by the architecture firm STARC, the project fully embraces a sober contemporary residential architecture, without any forced break with the surrounding neighbourhood in Waterloo, relying on the quality of proportions, the precision of junction details and the continuity of the facade treatment to give the renovated house a clear and coherent identity.
