— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

A contemporary single-storey extension to a detached family home in Temploux, Namur province, Wallonia, designed to address both a growing household's needs and improved accessibility within the home.

The original dwelling, compact in plan and classically detailed, could no longer accommodate the family's evolving requirements. The extension is positioned against the right-hand gable wall, adjacent to the existing garage. This placement was driven by the internal circulation logic of the house, while also ensuring that natural light to the existing living spaces remains unaffected. The new wing provides a ground-floor bedroom suite and a study, with full accessibility for a person with reduced mobility forming a core part of the brief.

The architectural language is deliberately contemporary: a flat-roofed volume clad in dark composite panels sets the extension in clear dialogue with the existing building rather than attempting to replicate its traditional character. This contrast between old and new ultimately achieves a more coherent integration than mimicry would have allowed. A pitched roof was also ruled out on technical grounds, as the low eave height of the existing structure would have required the removal of upper-floor windows.

Designed by STARC, this project demonstrates how a well-considered, restrained extension can meaningfully improve everyday living while maintaining architectural integrity.
