— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

Located in Gesves, in the province of Namur in Wallonia, this newly built four-sided single-family house in timber-frame construction was designed by STARC architecture firm as a contemporary response that respects the character of its rural village setting. The project is organised around a dominant rectangular main volume with a pitched roof, complemented by two secondary volumes and a perpendicular double-pitched carport, forming a unified and clearly articulated composition.

The fenestration strategy is tailored to each orientation. On the garden side, generous glazed openings flood the interior with natural light and frame an open view onto the landscaped outdoor space. On the street façade, vertically proportioned windows create a regular rhythm that engages sensitively with the scale of the surrounding village architecture, ensuring considered urban integration.

The material palette centres on a straw-yellow sandstone cladding across all elevations, paired with flat anthracite-grey roof tiles and aluminium joinery in the same tone. This restrained and consistent chromatic choice lends the building a contemporary aesthetic that remains in dialogue with its local context. The main volume is set back approximately eight metres from the property boundary, in keeping with the typical plot configuration of this rural area of Namur province, Belgium.
