— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
This single-family home extension in Perwez, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, illustrates a clear architectural intent: to articulate old and new with honesty, without mimicry, within a rural suburban fabric where red brick and pitched roofs define the prevailing character.
Designed by STARC architecture firm, the new volume is developed as a single-storey flat-roofed addition, forming a compact and low-lying mass that deliberately contrasts with the pitched silhouette of the existing house. The brick selected shares the warm tonal range of the original construction but features a finer grain and a slightly cooler hue, ensuring material coherence while preserving the legibility of the intervention. The extension asserts its own volumetric identity while remaining clearly connected to the host building.
A generous full-height glazed facade establishes a direct visual and spatial connection between the living spaces and the garden, drawing natural light deep into the interior and extending the perception of the rooms outward onto the lawn. Careful attention to constructive details, from the parapet finishes to the dark metal rainwater downpipes, reflects a commitment to architectural restraint and technical coherence, free of superfluous ornament.
