A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Corbais, in the province of Walloon Brabant, this residential project combines a rear extension, a kitchen redesign, a swimming pool and a new front garage into a coherent architectural intervention aimed at improving both liveability and energy performance. The project was designed by STARC, an architecture and engineering firm based in Wallonia.
The extension is positioned at the rear of the existing house, aligned with the right gable wall and matching the footprint of the current outbuilding. It accommodates a single-storey master suite, complete with bathroom and dressing room, a layout that offers immediate comfort while anticipating future accessibility needs. The flat roof gives the new volume a contemporary character, and roof lights bring natural daylight into the bathroom and dressing room. The enlarged kitchen, opened up with generous glazing towards the garden and pool, maximises natural light despite a north-west orientation.
The relationship with the surrounding landscape is carefully handled: dense vegetation screens the living areas from neighbouring properties, while open fields at the rear of the plot ensure an unobstructed and pleasant outlook from the new spaces. Built-in niches integrated into the extension's structure provide discreet storage for firewood feeding the existing wood-burning stove.
The materiality clearly distinguishes the new volume from the original building: timber cladding covers the extension's facades, while an anthracite grey composite panel canopy frames the flat roof. A new garage at the front of the property completes the programme, providing a covered parking space alongside storage for bicycles and household equipment.
