— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Folx-les-Caves, in the province of Walloon Brabant, STARC designed a four-sided detached house with a ground floor area of approximately 150 m², composed of a main volume, a garage, and a flat-roofed linking element. The project reflects a restrained contemporary approach while remaining sensitive to the character of the surrounding built environment.

The siting was carefully considered in response to the particular constraints of the plot, which sits on a bend in the road and is flanked by a dense hedge. A slight setback from the neighbouring buildings was chosen to ensure smooth urban integration and to provide adequate parking space in front of the garage.

The facade composition establishes a clear distinction between the street elevation and the garden side. Predominantly vertical openings structure the front facade, while larger windows at the rear maximise natural light and open the living spaces and bedrooms onto the garden. The dominant material is a red-brown facing brick, paired with dark flat roof tiles and dark-toned window frames, a palette that resonates with the local vernacular while delivering the contemporary feel sought by the client. Part of the roofing, technical installations, and finishes were carried out through self-build.
