— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
A single-storey extension in Chastre, in the province of Walloon Brabant: this project by STARC architecture firm replaces a succession of rear outbuildings on a detached family home with a single, compact and contemporary living volume tailored to the needs of modern family life.
The existing rear annexes created a fragmented floor plan that lacked both ergonomics and comfort. By demolishing them and introducing one unified volume in direct continuity with the main body of the house, the project brings together the kitchen, dining area and living room in a coherent and fluid space. The new volume is slightly wider than the original building, broadening the visual connection to the garden and allowing a large rear window to flood the interior with natural light throughout the day.
A flat roof ensures a seamless junction between old and new volumes without obstructing the upper-floor openings. The material palette is restrained and contemporary: dark grey facing brick, an EPDM waterproofing membrane and dune-grey joinery that echoes the existing window frames. This chromatic and formal consistency anchors the extension within its built context.
The interior layout is fully reorganised to complement the extension: the former dining room now houses a utility room, a toilet and a more functional entrance hall, the old living room becomes a study, and a new bathroom is created on the upper floor. A residential renovation and extension project that balances living quality, architectural coherence and contextual integration in Wallonia.
