— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Sauvenière, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), architecture firm STARC carried out the complete renovation and transformation of a traditional village house, including a perpendicular extension and a fully reconstructed upper floor.

The architectural approach involved a thorough restructuring of the existing building: the original upper floor and roof were demolished to make way for a new volume, complemented by convertible attic space. The extension houses a double garage and two new bedrooms on the upper level, addressing the need for expanded living areas and a more coherent interior layout. The overall footprint aligns with the scale of neighbouring buildings, while the set-back position of the extension allows the driveway to accommodate additional parking spaces.

The material palette is anchored by a red-brown brick, selected for its visual harmony with the surrounding village fabric. Anthracite grey window frames and garage doors introduce a contemporary accent without disrupting the overall coherence. On the rear facade, large openings ensure generous natural light in the main living spaces. The building's energy performance is significantly enhanced through insulation of the existing walls, the new roof structure and the extension. A timber-framed garden shed, set at the rear of the plot in continuity with the existing workshop, completes the programme.
