— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Court-Saint-Étienne, in Walloon Brabant, STARC delivered the renovation and extension of a single-family house through a confident architectural gesture that combines partial demolition with the construction of a new contemporary volume.

The design strategy involves removing the existing kitchen annex and replacing it with a new flat-roofed volume, tilted at 15° relative to the main building, whose overall massing remains unchanged. This inclination serves a clear purpose beyond its formal quality: it enables large south-facing openings that bring generous natural light into the newly created living spaces. At ground level, a family kitchen and dining room are accommodated; on the upper floor, two bedrooms and a utility room complete the brief.

The envelope of the new volume deliberately contrasts with the existing white-painted brick house. Cladding in anthracite grey composite panels gives the extension a contemporary materiality and a distinct identity, making the two architectural layers clearly legible and confidently expressed. A wide opening between the existing living room and the new extension ensures spatial continuity and fluid movement between the spaces.

Completed in 2020, this residential architecture project improves liveability, optimises the internal layout, and raises the energy performance of the home, all while asserting a restrained and coherent architectural language within the residential context of Court-Saint-Étienne, Wallonia.
