— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Baudour, in the province of Hainaut, Wallonia, STARC designed an extension to an existing residential building in the form of a prefabricated module housing a psychology practice. This self-contained structure of 24 square metres accommodates a waiting room, a consultation office and patient facilities, meeting the functional requirements of a professional healthcare setting.
The module is positioned as an adjoining volume to the right of the main house, ensuring urban coherence while maintaining the independence of the new structure. Its compact and restrained massing, topped by an overhanging flat roof, gives the whole a distinctly contemporary character. The material palette, white render on the facades, a grey rendered plinth and dark composite roof panels, creates a visual continuity between the extension and the existing dwelling.
The placement of openings was carefully considered to balance natural light and patient confidentiality. Two glazed doors are provided: one on the front facade giving access to the waiting room, and one on the side facade offering a discreet exit from the consultation room. The rear opening, facing the garden, is intentionally understated to prevent overlooking.
This project demonstrates how a prefabricated construction can respond precisely to a demanding professional programme while integrating discreetly into an established residential context in Wallonia.
