— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Sombreffe, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), architecture firm STARC designed an extension to an existing single-family house, expanding the living spaces and reorganising the interior layout to meet the family's evolving needs.
The approximately 45 m² flat-roof extension is positioned along the rear and left side elevations of the dwelling. Its compact footprint was carefully studied to preserve the views from the upper-floor bedrooms on the south-east side, while achieving a harmonious connection with the existing volume. Large openings on the south-facing rear elevation maximise natural light and provide a panoramic outlook onto the garden.
To clearly distinguish the new volume from the original building, the architects chose a beige siding cladding along the perimeter of the flat roof and on the left side elevation. This material palette gives the extension a contemporary character while integrating soberly into the residential fabric of Sombreffe. A utility shed incorporated into the left elevation provides storage for bins and bicycles, accessible from the back kitchen, the garden or the street.
Internally, the redistribution of spaces created a new open-plan kitchen connected to a generous dining area, an entrance wardrobe, a cloakroom, two living areas and a playroom. The project improves both the liveability and the energy performance of the home.
