— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Perwez, in the province of Walloon Brabant, architecture firm STARC carried out the conversion of a former farm stable of approximately 240 m² into contemporary living spaces, integrated within an existing dwelling composed of two distinct volumes.
The main volume, housing the original living quarters, remains unchanged. The intervention focuses entirely on the secondary volume, the adjoining stable, whose interior layout was comprehensively redesigned. On the ground floor, a living room, dining area and library have been created, establishing a coherent functional relationship with the existing home.
To improve natural light and liveability, existing window openings were enlarged on the front and side facades, allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the newly converted spaces. A utility room, accessible from both inside and outside, completes the ground-floor programme. A new door introduced in the rear facade creates an entry buffer zone, quietly mediating the transition between the service area and the living spaces.
This renovation reflects a sensitive approach to rural heritage, where the adaptive reuse of an agricultural building is balanced with a meaningful improvement in interior comfort and spatial quality.
