— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Bousval, in the Walloon Brabant province of Belgium, this residential project by STARC combines a single-storey timber-frame extension, a semi-enclosed carport and a series of interior transformations to a detached family home.
The new volume is positioned at the rear of the existing building beneath a large flat green roof, housing a spacious living area that opens fully onto the garden through a glazed facade. A projecting roof overhang on the south-facing side acts as a solar shading device, balancing natural light and thermal comfort throughout the year. The carport emerges naturally as the flat roof extends along the side gable of the house. The material palette, combining anthracite composite panels, timber cladding and glass, gives the extension a refined and contemporary character while maintaining visual lightness.
Internally, the renovation of the existing pitched roof introduces a rear dormer window that channels natural light into the centrally located bedrooms. These rooms now open onto the previously unused attic space, which has been transformed into a mezzanine level with views over the wooded garden. Enhanced roof insulation contributes to a significant improvement in the building's overall energy efficiency.
All interventions are concentrated at the rear of the property, ensuring no visual impact from the street. The existing front facade remains entirely unchanged. This project demonstrates how a carefully considered extension can unlock new spatial and luminous qualities in existing residential architecture.
