— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Gembloux, in the province of Namur, Wallonia, STARC architecture firm designed the demolition of an existing conservatory and the reconstruction of a contemporary rear extension to a three-facade detached house, with the core ambition of opening the living space fully onto the garden.

The architectural concept centres on full-height glazed openings along the entire width of the living room, dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior. A generously overhanging roof extends this gesture outward, creating a sheltered transitional space that makes outdoor living comfortable throughout the year.

The massing of the extension sits precisely within the original building envelope of the plot and responds harmoniously to the surrounding residential context. The contemporary treatment of the rear facade brings visual interest to the whole without disrupting the neighbourhood scale, striking a balance between architectural restraint and generous natural light.

This project demonstrates how a carefully considered intervention can fundamentally transform a home's relationship with its immediate landscape while maintaining thoughtful urban integration.
