— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Chastre, in the province of Walloon Brabant, STARC designed a single-storey extension to a residential house, replacing an existing veranda with a contemporary flat-roofed annex housing a larger dining room, directly connected to a fully redesigned kitchen. Completed in 2019, the project forms part of a comprehensive approach to improving the home's liveability and energy performance.
The extension occupies the footprint of the former veranda at the rear of the house. The choice of a flat roof ensures a harmonious junction between the new volume and the existing red-brick building, while clearly asserting the contemporary character of the addition. The facade materiality, white render with a dark plinth, gives the annex a distinct and coherent identity that integrates naturally into the built and unbuilt surroundings.
A wider opening between the kitchen and the new dining room establishes a direct connection between these two living spaces, enhancing functional flow and bringing sufficient natural light into the kitchen. The facade openings of the extension also create a visual and physical relationship with the garden.
Through its controlled massing, flat roof, and carefully considered materiality, this residential extension project in Chastre demonstrates how a well-crafted architectural intervention can discreetly transform a home while delivering lasting improvements in comfort, spatial quality, and energy efficiency.
