— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Pietrebais, in the Walloon Brabant province of Wallonia, STARC designed a new residential unit combined with a two-car garage, replacing an existing agricultural shed on the plot. This new-build project reflects a thoughtful approach to compact, efficient construction within a small-scale village setting.
The new volume is positioned parallel to the street and built directly against the main existing building, creating a coherent and integrated ensemble. Its footprint is smaller than that of the shed it replaces, freeing up outdoor space on the plot while delivering comfortable living areas. The entrance to the dwelling, placed on the left side of the volume, aligns naturally with the existing driveway and the slope of the land, ensuring intuitive and accessible circulation.
The living accommodation is arranged over the upper floors, with the main living space oriented towards the south-east to maximise natural light and solar gain throughout the day. A balcony extends the interior living space outward. The pitched roof and predominantly vertical massing echo the architectural character of the surrounding neighbourhood. The choice of materials, light-toned rendered facades, carefully proportioned window frames and anthracite slate roofing, establishes a clear visual dialogue with the existing built fabric and ensures the project sits naturally within its context.
