— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Glimes, in the province of Walloon Brabant, STARC designed an extension to a single-family home to house a dedicated drawing studio, combining contemporary architectural language with careful integration into a wooded residential setting.

The decision to position the annex at the front of the plot stems from a close reading of the site's configuration, topography and orientation. By drawing visitors directly from the street, this approach preserves the privacy of the rear gardens and limits unnecessary circulation through the private outdoor spaces of the dwellings.

The extension's massing adopts a resolutely modern vocabulary that clearly signals its distinct function from the main brick-built structure. This difference is further expressed through materiality: the timber cladding chosen for the annex stands in deliberate contrast to the existing masonry while echoing the strongly arborated character of the surrounding landscape. The result is a volume that is quietly embedded in its context yet legible as an independent architectural piece.

The project reflects an approach rooted in sobriety, contextual coherence and a precise architectural response to the brief, hallmarks of this architecture firm based in Gembloux, Wallonia.
