In Lonzée, in the province of Namur in Wallonia, this detached single-family house with an integrated artist's studio was designed around a compact, refined volumetric approach. The architectural concept prioritises formal clarity, with clean lines and a restrained composition that fits seamlessly into the existing built fabric.
The treatment of openings is central to the design. On the front elevation, large glazed bays at first-floor level flood the living spaces with natural light, bringing together the living room, dining area and open kitchen in a bright and generous atmosphere. The rear elevation, by contrast, features smaller openings to protect the privacy of the home from neighbouring plots and the public space beyond.
The choice of materials reinforces the project's coherent identity. White render covers all four facades, while the roof is clad in artificial slates in anthracite grey. The interplay between the bright rendered surfaces and the dark roof covering gives the house a contemporary yet grounded aesthetic. STARC, the Belgium-based architecture firm, ensured that both the scale and the materiality of the building contribute to a successful integration within this Wallonian village setting.
