— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Sauvenière, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), architecture firm STARC designed a competition entry for a single-family house defined by a unitary, vaulted volume whose compact and sculptural silhouette asserts a singular presence within a leafy suburban setting.
The founding gesture of the project is a circular arc section that generates a low, enveloping form set back from the street. Rather than echoing the scale of neighbouring buildings, the house engages with its landscape through the continuity of its profile, dissolving the conventional distinction between wall and roof. The green roof follows the curve of the building and extends naturally into the surrounding ground, achieving a discreet landscape integration despite the boldness of the architectural form.
Materiality plays a decisive role in articulating the relationship between building and environment. A dark timber cladding of closely spaced vertical boards covers the front elevation, lending rhythm and depth to the façade. Glazing concentrated beneath the vault on the main façade draws natural light deep into the interior while establishing a measured tension between the solidity of the cladding and the transparency of the glass. The formal coherence and the soberly contrasted materiality together constitute the sole architectural language of this project.
