— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Pessoux, in the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region of Namur province, architecture firm STARC has designed a new build comprising two detached houses situated at the edge of a residential subdivision, at the interface between a recently developed neighbourhood and an open rural landscape. This threshold position drives the architectural approach: grounding two dwellings in their context while maintaining a coherent identity as an ensemble.

The massing articulates two distinct yet interdependent volumes, unified by a shared formal language and common materiality that ensure the readability of the project from the street. The restrained scale aligns with the surrounding built fabric, avoiding any abrupt disruption to the streetscape. The pitched roofline, consistent with the architectural vocabulary of the area, reinforces this integration while organising the interior volumes.

The siting is conceived to preserve the quality of the private outdoor spaces and to optimise orientation towards the rear gardens. The fenestration is measured and rhythmic on the street facade, opening more generously to the rear to maximise natural light and strengthen the connection between living spaces and the garden. The compactness of the volumes reduces heat loss and meets the demands of a quality residential programme in a rural setting in Wallonia, Belgium.
