— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Grez-Doiceau, in the province of Walloon Brabant, this project combines the renovation of an existing 1970s residential building with a new construction, creating two fully independent family dwellings, each comprising three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The existing building, characterised by its compact massing, natural slate double-pitched roof, white-painted masonry and timber-toned joinery, sits within a dense, enveloping landscape that speaks to a long-established presence on the site. The rehabilitation focuses on restoring volumetric clarity while improving the visual and spatial connection between the living areas and the garden, through reworked ground-floor glazing and the careful use of existing roof lights as sources of natural daylight.
The new construction adopts a restrained volumetry that engages in dialogue with the existing building without mimicking it, asserting a measured contemporaneity. Both entities are organised to ensure complete independence while rationalising access from the public domain. STARC, the architecture firm behind the project, has guided the design with a consistent focus on material coherence, landscape integration and the preservation of the site's existing vegetation.
The mature planting is retained wherever possible, and the outdoor layout creates a smooth transition between the two dwellings and their natural setting, making landscape continuity a central thread running through the entire project.
