— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Mont-Saint-Guibert, in the province of Walloon Brabant, this project involves the construction of two three-sided single-family homes, each with a footprint of approximately 80 m², designed to integrate coherently into a semi-urban residential fabric characterised by varied building heights, white rendered facades and red brick.

The two volumes are positioned side by side with a deliberate gap between them, ensuring continuity along the street frontage while allowing natural light to reach the lateral elevations and providing visual breathing space between the buildings. Each house offers a compact programme arranged over two levels with convertible attic space, providing three bedrooms and three bathrooms within a generous living area despite a restrained footprint. The pitched rooflines echo the slopes of the surrounding neighbourhood, reinforcing the landscape integration of the ensemble within this residential context in Wallonia.

The glazing strategy orients the main living spaces towards the garden at the rear of the plot, while the street-facing facades adopt a measured rhythm of openings that preserves the privacy of the occupants. The material palette, chosen for its sobriety and dialogue with the local architectural vocabulary, avoids any conspicuous break with the surrounding context. STARC designed the boundary treatment along the street edge to create a careful transition between public space and private access, while maintaining a degree of visual permeability towards the wooded depth of the site.
