— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Faulx-les-Tombes, in the province of Namur (Wallonia), STARC designed a new-build development of two semi-detached houses, set within a low-density village fabric characterised by an alternation of built plots and generous green spaces.
The architectural approach favours a compact, contained volume whose scale aligns with the surrounding built references without seeking to stand apart from them. The party wall shared by the two dwellings is treated as a structuring element of the composition, rationalising the building footprint and freeing private outdoor spaces on either side of the building, in dialogue with the dense vegetation bordering the plot. From the street, the ensemble reads as a unified whole, while each home retains full independence.
The materiality and fenestration follow a logic of restraint and landscape integration, echoing the tones and facade rhythms observable in the local built context. The orientation of the volume promotes natural light into the living spaces, and the indoor-outdoor relationship is carefully considered towards the private gardens, sheltered from the street.
This residential architecture project demonstrates the ability of the architecture firm to articulate two dwellings on a sensitive village site, combining compactness, urban coherence and quality of living environment.
