— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Ixelles, in the Brussels-Capital Region, STARC has designed a new wildlife care centre, a public facility with an environmental vocation whose architecture expresses a considered relationship with living matter and the urban landscape.
The building's siting takes advantage of its Brussels context to deliver a facility genuinely rooted in its immediate surroundings. The chosen massing favours sobriety and functional clarity, in keeping with the specific programme of reception, care and rehabilitation of wild animals. Interior spaces are conceived to reconcile the technical demands of veterinary treatment with the well-being of the animals housed within.
The materiality and spatial organisation of the project follow a logic of sustainability, seeking to minimise the building's footprint while offering optimal operational conditions. Natural light is integrated as an essential component of the interior atmosphere, benefiting both the care staff and the animals in recovery.
This project demonstrates the firm's ability to design atypical facilities where programmatic rigour and architectural sensibility work together to address demanding and singular uses at the heart of Brussels.
