— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

The conversion of a former paper mill in Jodoigne into a mixed-use building comprising five residential units and two retail spaces demonstrates how disused industrial heritage can be meaningfully reintegrated into a dense urban fabric.

The architectural approach centres on a considered adaptive reuse of the existing structure, preserving the legibility of the original volume while reshaping it around a contemporary programme. The building's urban setting in the heart of Jodoigne, in Walloon Brabant, called for careful attention to circulation, access points and the relationship between residential and commercial uses within a single ensemble.

The interior layout was entirely redesigned to give each dwelling its own identity, adequate natural light and a measured connection to shared spaces. The two ground-floor retail units root the project in the life of the neighbourhood and contribute to the broader requalification of this urban block.

This renovation and heritage conversion project, designed by the Belgian architecture firm STARC, reflects a restrained and coherent design philosophy, with a strong focus on urban integration and the long-term viability of the transformed building.
