In Montignies-sur-Sambre, in the province of Hainaut in Wallonia, STARC designed a seven-apartment residential building delivered through a self-build approach, placing cost control and the direct involvement of future occupants at the heart of both the design and construction process. The building is integrated into the existing residential fabric of the neighbourhood, with a volumetry that responds to the surrounding built environment and an implantation that respects the established plot pattern. The architectural design prioritises clear floor plans, a rational organisation of shared circulation spaces and an efficient distribution of the dwelling units, qualities that are particularly critical in a self-build context where every technical decision directly affects the resources of the project owners. Each apartment is conceived to make the most of natural light and functional comfort, offering future residents a sober and durable living environment within an evolving district of the Walloon region.
