— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Saint-Vaast, in the province of Hainaut, Wallonia, STARC designed a dual-unit residential building whose composition rests on the articulation of two distinct volumes rendered in a deliberate two-tone palette, giving the project a contemporary identity while remaining in scale with the surrounding suburban context.

The interplay between a white rendered volume, restrained and rhythmically sober in its facade treatment, and a second volume clad in a dark stone-textured finish, set slightly higher, provides a clear reading of the two dwellings without imposing a sharp contrast on the existing streetscape. The darker volume, which asserts itself as the entry signal, features generous vertical glazing bringing natural light and visual porosity between levels. The white volume modulates its openings through vertical strips framed by dark window frames, maintaining verticality without burdening the overall composition.

A shared flat roof over both main volumes and the laterally recessed garage reinforces the compactness of the ensemble and its horizontal reading from the street. The front yard, treated with light gravel punctuated by stepping slabs and low planting, extends the compositional care of the architecture all the way to the public realm, while the garage preserves the legibility of the inhabited facades without competing with them.

Each dwelling offers approximately 110 m² across several levels with four bedrooms, delivering a generous family programme within an architecturally coherent and resolved framework.
