— Project intent
A precise answer to the site and programme.
In Thorembais-Saint-Trond, in Walloon Brabant, this project combines the renovation of a single-family house with the new construction of a building housing garages and a residential apartment, with a clear focus on contextual integration within the existing neighbourhood fabric.
The renovation work on the existing house involves the reorganisation of interior spaces, the replacement of several windows and doors, the demolition of a garden shed to make way for a canopy, and the creation of a swimming pool in the garden. These interventions aim to enhance living comfort while preserving the character of the existing structure.
The newly built volume, set between neighbouring constructions, accommodates garages on the ground floor and an apartment on the upper level, complemented by a utility room and two parking spaces. Its massing and ridge height align with the surrounding buildings, maintaining continuity with the rooflines of adjacent properties. Generous openings on the facade ensure ample natural light in the living spaces of the apartment. A white rendered finish unifies the ensemble with its context, while Puma Line garage doors introduce a contemporary note to the street elevation.
Designed by the Belgian architecture firm STARC, this project demonstrates a functional and context-sensitive approach to residential architecture in Wallonia, where every architectural decision contributes to a coherent, well-integrated whole.
