The conversion of a historic farm building in Villers-la-Ville, in the province of Walloon Brabant, demonstrates how architecture firm STARC can transform rural heritage into a contemporary mixed-use programme, bringing together three apartments, a loft, a seven-bedroom guesthouse, a restaurant and a bar under one roof.
The architectural approach is rooted in a careful reading of the farm's distinct built components. The former stable and barn were opened up generously towards the garden and the public realm through large anthracite-grey PVC window frames, while the main building retains its original, narrower openings to preserve the intimacy of the bedroom spaces. This differentiated strategy for natural light ensures that all residential units enjoy sufficient daylighting and garden views, while keeping structural interventions to a minimum and improving overall energy performance.
The choice of facade materials reflects a commitment to authenticity: the main body retains its white render, while the walls of the stable and barn are sandblasted to reveal their original red-brown brick. Roofs are insulated and the slate cladding renewed. The anthracite PVC joinery creates a coherent and contemporary reading across the ensemble. Landscape design was also addressed, with the addition of a terrace, a veranda and a parking area that together form a structured and welcoming outdoor setting.
This residential and hospitality conversion successfully balances respect for vernacular architecture, energy efficiency and contemporary living standards in the heart of Wallonia.
