— Project intent

A precise answer to the site and programme.

In Bossut-Gottechain, in the province of Walloon Brabant, architecture firm STARC designed a pair of semi-detached three-facade houses, completed in 2019, combining compact construction, generous living spaces and a carefully considered integration into the surrounding built environment.

To give each house its own identity while preserving the unity of the ensemble, a projecting secondary volume was introduced on the main facade of each dwelling. This straightforward architectural move creates a gentle rhythm between the two homes and adds volumetric interest without resorting to unnecessary complexity.

The architectural language is deliberately classical, responding to the character of the neighbouring buildings. The choice of a red-brown brick, the detailing of the window frames and the treatment of the ancillary volumes all contribute to a restrained and durable materiality that sits naturally within the residential context of Bossut-Gottechain. The project demonstrates how residential architecture in Wallonia can achieve distinctiveness and contextual belonging in equal measure.
